Antique Greek Orthodox Cross Greece Mount Athos 18th-19th Century

Large antique Greek orthodox double-sided, carved wood Blessing cross, Greece, Holy Mount Athos circa 18th-19th century.

The front finally carved with the crucified Christ flanked by the Virgin and the Apostle John with the skull of Adam on the bottom end. The crossbeam terminals with four Evangelists

The verso finally carved with the Baptism of Christ with the Holy Spirit descending on him as a dove, the crossbeam terminals with three Evangelists and God the Father at top.

Contained in a brass casing with sunburst rays emanating from the four corners, mounted on a turned baluster form brass stem permanently attached to the stepped circular base.


MEASUREMENTS: 25.5 cm x 9.3 cm (10.04 inches x 3.66 inches).


CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, with dark patina. The cross (including brass and the wood) is, in fact, darker than it appears in the picture, because we had used a strong light during the photographing to show the fine details of the carving.
