Antique 13-15th c Medieval Chain Mail Mittens Gauntlets to Polish Hussar Armor

A very rare pair of Antique, European, Medieval 13th 15th century, knight chain mail, Mittens, Gauntlets reused and altered in the 17th century to the of Polish Hussar Karacena Armor.


DETAILS: Medieval, 13th-15th century, chainmail Mitten, Gauntlets composed of extremely well hand forged interlocking riveted flattened iron rings of typical Medieval Western European style. With added in 17th century leather border straps with iron rivets, buckle the thumbs guards formed of karacena type iron scale plates riveted to the leather liner.

The rounded scale plates are of the same shape as can be seen on the 17th century Polish hussar Karacena type szyszaks and armours. Also, some of the examples of Polish karacena armour were constructed of scale plates and Chainmail. Please see the pictures attached to the listing.


CONDITION: Showing age and usage, Medieval chain mail iron rings are rusty, the 17th century iron thumbs scales slightly pitted. Absence of the fastened lather belt and the clasp on one of the mittens, leather cracked. Signs of the restitching the leather straps. Possibility that the front of the mittens originally would have been sewn to the leather or fabric mittens.
