SOLD Antique Indo Persian Islamic Muslim Sword 19th century
Antique 19th century Indo Persian, Islamic, Shia Muslim ceremonial all-steel sword in the form of a straight, double-edged medieval Islamic sword.
The entire broad blade is superbly etched on both sides with Arabic calligraphy, possibly verses from the Qur'an, a serpent, and the figure of the mythological demon "Div" (دیو).
The hilt has an elaborate pommel with an integral cross guard, down curving quillons shaped like stylized mythical dragon heads, and a pair of langets with silver koftgari work (now mostly gone).
The blade is highly flexible since it is 2.23 mm thick.NOTE: These 19th-century swords were exclusively designed for ceremonial purposes in parades and religious events. They were primarily used during the procession of Ashura, which is the tenth day of the month of Muharram, designated for mourning by Shi'ite Muslims. Shi'ite Muslims observe this day to remember the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
