Antique American Militia Officer’s Sword Perhaps Civil War Or Indian Wars

Antique American Military, Militia officer's sword, from the second half of the 19th century, perhaps the Civil War or Indian War period. An elaborate hilt with silvered brass mounting comprises, ornate cross-guard with arrowhead terminals decorated with laurel leaves.

Central quillon block adorned on both sides with Federal Eagle holding a bundle of arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right talon, together symbolizing that the United States has "a strong desire for peace, but will always be ready for war.

Leather-covered ribbed wooden grip bound with fine brass strap and full relief American eagle surmounting the pommel.

 

A straight, double-edged plane steel blade with elliptical cross-section stamped on the ricasso with a small number 7. The sword comes with its original silvered brass scabbard mounted with an elaborately shaped chape and two suspension rings.

 

MEASUREMENTS:

Overall length: 94 cm (37 inches)

Overall length without the scabbard: 90.5 cm (35 5/8 inches)

 

CONDITION; in good condition considering its age, the silvering is worn-out, blade slightly stained. All of this is an aspect from a used antique sword, over 100 years old.
