Antique late 18th Century American Gilt Seals Handle In Federal Style

SKU: EA283

Antique late 18th-early 19th-century American gilt bronze and blackened desk letter wax seals handle in typical American federal style manner. The handle is composed of solid blackened bronze orb adorned with two American Bald eagles with large spread wings, clutching a bundle of arrows in its left talon, and an olive branch in its right talon, together symbolizing that the United States has "a strong desire for peace, but will always be ready for war.

The American Federal period (1789 to 1823) that emerged roughly a decade after the declaration of independence and the formation of the United States of America in 1776 brought on a new-found assertion by the people, not only in politics, but in the creative arts, architecture, and furniture making.

The United States Congress adopted the American bald eagle for the national seal in 1782. It soon became the most popular patriotic decorative motifs.
