Ancient Byzantine Bronze Reliquary Encolpion Cross 8th-10th century A.D.

Authentic ancient Byzantine bronze pectoral Reliquary Cross ENCOLPION, circa 8th-10th century A.D. Composed of two separately-cast halves hinged at the base and pinned to a suspension loop above. Finely chiseled in low relief with the Crucifixion on the obverse and the Virgin Orans (Virgin Mary) on the reverse. 
 
 
 
DIMENSIONS: Height: 5.4 cm (2 1/8 inches). Width: 2.5 cm (1 inches). 
 
CONDITION: In its original condition showing the age and usage with a nice dark green-brown patina, minor hole beneath the right arm of the Christ 
 

 
 
 
Remarks: Reliquary crosses ENCOLPION were bought as mementos of pilgrimages to holy sites such as Jerusalem. A holy relic would be placed inside the cross which would then be sealed and worn around the neck.
