Antique 17th century Islamic Turkish Ottoman or Hungarian Mace Topuz - Buzogányo
Rare antique, 17th century, Turkish Ottoman or Hungarian combat mace, “Topuz - Buzogányok".
DETAILS: A hand forged, compact, bulbous iron head formed with an arrangement of robust flanges, with an integral socket of octagonal section, wooden haft decorated with incised scrolls.
REFERENCES: (1) A very similar Turkish mace is published in the Serbian book, "Weapons in the City Museum Vršac", page 60. (2) A comparable mace is published in the Hungarian book “Historical Exhibition”, presenting pieces from Sandor Joth’s collection, Page: 74. Description: Hungarian Lieutenant’s mace 17th century.

The mace was established as an Ottoman symbol of office from at least as early as the 16th century, carried by senior officers in war. In eastern and central Europe a flanged mace was bared by a colonel as a symbol of rank, and a sign of the officer's authority.
CONDITION: Dark, heavy patination with age wear, some flanges in the iron head are missing. The wooden haft soaked with oil and waxed, is in fact, darker than shown in the pictures.
