SOLD Antique, 18th century, Rare Polish sword (saber) with a massive silver plated brass hussar type stirrup hilt, comprising a stirrup knuckle bow with a pair of langets, bud-shaped quillon and a back strap with an almond shaped pommel and outer guard, formed of shaped bars with monsters heads terminals, incorporating and cast and finely chiseled in low relief a typical Polish trophy – of – arms, enclosed men with mustaches wearing a helmet and classical armour, decorated on shoulders with mascarons masks, and surrounded by military cattle, drums and bugles, retaining its original sharkskin covered wooden grip. A slightly curved single edged blade cut with a full-length fuller, double-edged towards the point, retaining traces of engravings. The forte engraved on both sides “VIVAT.” A very popular phrase in 17th -18th century Poland. Also the trophy – of – arms is distinguishing for Poland and frequently appears on late 17th -18th century polish military equipment, as on the 18th century Polish cartage pouch in the collection of The Polish National Museum in Kielce, Published in the book Bron katalog zbiorow by Ryszard de Latour . 19685. The swords hilts, with outer guard become popular in Poland the first half of the 18th century, during the reign of King Augustus II and Augustus III.
