SOLD Antique Scottish powder horn with white metal mounts (German silver)

SOLD Extremely fine Antique 19th century Scottish dress powder horn. DETAILS: The polished horn body with white metal mounts (German silver) including finial, beautifully sculptured as a deer head, the domed basal cap decorated with embossed and chased scrolling thistles amidst two engraved cartouches set at the top with a faceted cut glass jewel. The centre adorned with plaque decorated en-suite with the cap and set with a faceted cut glass jewel. Complete with its flattened brass suspension chain. All fittings are permanently fixed, there is no opening to the interior of the horn.

These types of powder horns were mainly worn for decoration as part of full Highland dress, not as containers for gunpowder.

CONDITION: Shows signs of usage and wear, some rivets are missing, absence of one of the deer horns, the top glass jewel with one chip.


DIMENSIONS: Approximately Overall length: 20 cm (7 7/8 in).Width at the front: 10cm (3 7/8 in)

This particular horn is similar in the style to the Scottish horn in Eilean Donan Castle at the Loch Alsh Lake | Jurjen Drenth.
