SOLD Antique 18th Century Naval Boarding Axe

SOLD Very unusual Antique, 18th century, Naval Boarding Axe with sturdy hand forged steel head, of elegant shaped form, incised with elaborate design. Mounted on its original dark wood shaft of oval (possibly ebony), surmounted by brass lion head finial, and closed on the other end by a brass pommel with a knob for a cord suspension.


This particular boarding axe is from the golden Age of Sail, when the boarding axes were not mass produced, according to the pattern, but were, in many cases custom made. It was used by both sailors and pirates alike, as a close combat weapon.


CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing the age and usage.


MEASUREMENTS: Overall length; 45.5 cm (17.91 inches), length of the head; 13.8 cm (5.43 inches).
