SOLD Extremely rare Authentic Antique late 16th century circa 1580 A.D.

(Over 400 Year Old) Polish Hussar sword Palash - Batorowka Gdanska, (King Stefan Batory period: 1571 A.D.-1586 A.D.) with a slightly curved single edged, sturdy, hand forged steel blade stamped with the maker's marks( small crescent moon and star).

A skillfully hand forged iron hilt of rounded bars, comprising a pair of straight quilons with bulbous terminals, with inner and outer knuckle guards. The grip retaining its original binding of plaited wire, with fluted cushion shaped pommel.

As Wlodzimierz Kwasniewicz wrote in the book "Dzieje szabli w Polsce", only five examples of this early Polish Husar’s swords Palash’s survived to the present day and all of them are in the Polish state collection. Some of them have bears on the blade and an etched bust of King Stephan Bathory, (the gold inlaid bust of King Stephan Bathory appear on the blades of the Polish swords after the death of King Stephan Bathory in the 17th century, during the reign of Zigmuntus III Vasa). According to polish tradition this type of the Hussar’s Palash and the Hussar’s sabers were made only during the reign of King Stephan Bathory, in the city Gdansk, so both of these swords, palash’s and saber’s, were named Batorowka Gdanska.

During the 17th century hussar’s sword’s, palash’s, changed the style of the hilt and were made with plane “S” shaped guard.
