A Chinese 19th - 20th century large bronze figure of Amitabha Buddha seated on a lotus in dhyanasana, the hands held in front joined in dhyanamudra, holding a stupa in the form of pagoda dressed in loose robes, falling from the shoulders over the arms and onto the ground, covered overall with a finely etched with rondels composed from stylized shou characters amongst trailing foliage pattern, the hem with scrolling lotus, all on a stippled ground, the bare chest with a wan emblem, the large head with fine features, downcast eyes under high arching brows, the mouth slightly upturned in a beatific smile, all below tightly curled hair set in the center with the ushnshu .

Its integral geometrical form base decorated in openwork at the front with Buddhist symbols, its back signed with the seal in zhuanshu script.

Length of the base: 52 cm (20.47 inches)
Width of the base: 34.5 cm (13.58 inches)

WEIGHT: 27.22 kg (60 lbs)

CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, showing usage and is worn out on the exposed areas. The stupa is cast separately and is removable.

REFERENCES: A related late 19th century Chinese bronze figure of Lohan with an almost identical etched design on the robe is published in the Christie’s catalogue Asian Ceramics and Works of Art 13 April 2000 Los Angeles.
